Abstract

This chapter focuses on the process of the creation of a “new mythology” of the first French settlers of Québec in Fréchette’s epic nineteenth-century poem. Composed in the poetic style of his time, the poem successively highlights the significant stages of the formation of a new culture, from the arrival of the first explorers and settlers through the late nineteenth century. In his analysis of the poem, the author employed Yvan Lamonde’s methodology and his original definition of the factors that influenced the shaping of the Québécois identity.
